The Challenge: Being Social in a 140 Characters or Less World

Here I am staring down October’s calendar attempting to plug in content topics and start idea developments and I’m faced with the same question: “Are these really socially engaging and valuable to my customer audience”?

Sure, I try to mix things up with informational posts, a few motivational pieces, and a good laugh, but what really comes of all these bits and pieces I put out?

Added followers and fans are wonderful. But, I’m much more interested in the engagement and interaction of my 140 characters or less World. What struck a chord and got people talking or asking more questions? What resonated, affirmed, or changed in those people? Am I only interacting with these people online or can this relationship be nurtured in person, too?

Being social is more than sharing an inspirational thought or asking another open ended question to try and game the engagement rates. Online and off, it’s about truly making time for those important to you. Small business owners know this. The clients I work with managing their social media strategies, know this. Their entire businesses are built on personal interaction. Being online is a bonus. The posts and pictures are micro-connections. But, they want customers for life, not for the duration of post life.

Knowing that only about 16% of what gets posted on Facebook might actually get seen, or that there are on average 400 million tweets sent a day to wade through, I’m thinking a few phone calls and personal emails will cut through noise quite effectively.

So, here’s my little challenge: For every three pieces of content I write and post, I’m going to go through all the business cards I’ve collected over the past couple of months and call or email that person. I don’t mean cold call for a sales pitch or send out a scripted e-newsletter.  I mean to just pick up the phone and ask them how they’re doing.  I’m going to email, just to say what a pleasure it was meeting them and that I was thinking of them.

Who’s with me in the personal interaction challenge? Even if you don’t have a handful of new business cards, I suggest going back to former customers and vendors and just say hi.  Let me know how you make out this coming month.
